Ridgewood Youth Recreation Facility

"The Shack" is a youth recreation facility that was created by youth from Iron Range Youth in Action and the City of Virginia Youth Council. "The Shack" was formerly known as the "Ridgewood Rink" before it was completely renovated by our area youth. It was a totally dilapidated building in need of total renovation. IRYA members have raised funds in the excess of $20,000 either through fundraising efforts, grants, or donations to make this project possible. Numerous companies and community members donated materials, time, and money to this project. The youth did much of the remodeling, from tearing down walls, to putting up new insulation. As one of a few positive and healthy places for our youth to gather, "The Shack" is a vital part of the community for our youth. It's a fun and safe place for youth to go throughout the year. Over 20 Virginia students are employed by "The Shack" to help run the concession. There is a youth manager, assistant manager, and accountant. It has been an excellent opportunity for our area youth to learn business skills and the responsibilities that go along with holding a job. "The Shack" is an ongoing annual project that is continuously moving in new directions and impacting youth. "The Shack" is completely youth run. It is equipped with computers, arcades, TV's, study area, full kitchen concession, handicap accessible bathroom, foosball, air hockey, basketball, ice-skating, and most recently a beach volleyball court has been installed by the youth. It has become a year-round facility. More plans are in store for "The Shack" so we hope you'll offer your support. Thank you for believing in the youth of Virginia!
