Youth in action (YIA) promotes youth leadership to its highest level and asks youth to make a difference in the lives of others.

Social Media announcement

What is YIA?

Youth in Action (or YIA) is a St. Louis County program that promotes leadership by getting students involved in school and community projects that make a positive impact.

Youth in Action opportunities are available in Iron Range and Duluth area schools for students in grades 9-12. It is free to join and everybody is welcome!

Our MISSION is to maintain and support youth development and community programs and projects. We work to promote public service values to better engage young adults with their communities. Our goal is to bring positive change to St. Louis County through partnerships with students, schools, community organizations and businesses and our in-school advisors.

A message from Youth in Action Coordinators:

These past few months have been a whirlwind for our communities within St. Louis County. Youth in Action is all about service. Engaging young people to make St. Louis County a better place to live. How do we provide service and add value to our community when we’re supposed to social distance? For an organization that works hard to bring young people together, what do we do now?

Kyle Willkom spoke at our 2020 YIA Make a Difference Conference. For those that couldn’t attend, we’ll give you a refresher. He said the same old thinking is going to get us the same old results. WELL right now we can’t do our same old thinking – we truly have to think outside the box. We have to be the HERO: Help, Engage, Respond & Own Our Power. Kyle challenged us to make one positive difference every day in the life of someone else. Remember the writing across our foreheads? “Make me feel important”. This is exactly what YIA is going to do.

Our mission remains the same to maintain and support young people. We challenge you to be the HERO.

We encourage you to stay connected with Tyler, Angela, Taryn & Elise. We want to hear from you. We cannot emphasize this enough. We are here for YOU!

Remember when we could all be together? Work as a group, help others, have a great time? Well, we are working and planning opportunities to do just that (following all guidelines) so stay tuned! And if you would like to be part of planning what we will be doing DM us or send a message to Tyler, Taryn, Elise, or Angela! Can't wait to start making a difference together again! #makeadifference #together #youthinaction #mnstrong #justkeepswimming #covid19

We hope everyone had a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend! It is National Barbecue Week! If anything sounds and smells like summer, it is grilling! Just ask Vivi and Lexi. They were our master grillers last summer at the Ronald McDonald House in Minneapolis! 😎 #youthinactionmn #summerretreat #barbecue

This Sunday is National Scavenger Hunt Day! We found a Gratitude Scavenger Hunt that asks you to slow down and think about what you’re grateful for and then use it as a visual reminder of all the good in our lives! Here’s young people were grateful for - our presenters in Ely who are interactive & innovative, our Proctor seniors who have bright futures ahead & we’ll miss greatly, our South Ridge team what teach us to cross the line & take risks and to these 4 Hermantown youth who collectively volunteered 16 hours over the 2020 holiday season. Have fun hunting for the good life! #youthinactionmn #railstrong #stlouiscountymn #youngleaders #gratitude

Anyone else have a quarantine birthday?! This big man turned 3 in March, but until the small family gatherings were allowed we haven't been able to celebrate properly. It may be 2 months late, but this might be his most memorable one yet! Make sure you celebrate your birthday with loved ones, responsibly and follow the guidelines, if you weren't able to do so already, and don't forget to wish others a happy birthday! Happy birthday Tate! #youthinaction #makeadifference #covid19 #togetherathome #happybirthday

Today was gorgeous! Did you get out and play? We hope you did and we hope your smile was as big as Cam’s. We hope to be exploring with all of you soon! #youthinactionmn #getoutsideandplay #freshairandsunshine

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Presenters at Hermantown focused on mental health this year - see graduating senior Erin Wester. 👏@tmentalhealth says “focusing on what’s in our control can help us to act with courage during uncertain times.” They offer this exercise (fill in the sentence) - “while I can’t control _______, I can ______.” What can you do today for improved mental health? Thinking of you all 🌞 #youthinactionmn #mentalhealth #takecareofyourself #takecareofeachother

Happy Friday! Elise’s parents have been busy bees in the garden this spring! Pictures include a raised bed garden with bulb plants like iris & daffodils, transplanted forsythia shoots, a work-in-progress rock garden, in-house flower seeds in potting soil, potted dill, cilantro & 1 pepper, an old dog kennel that will be used to keep the deer out of a future herb garden and poppy shoots! Has anyone else finding happiness in the dirt? 🌻#youthinactionmn #gardeningideas #rockgarden #growyourownherbs

This shelter in place has turned life upside down, created stress, anxiety, and a bit of isolation. During this time I've spent nearly 10 week's home with two ball's of energy, and it didn't take long for us to get bored of the same routine. Taking care of yourself both mentally and physically during this time is equally as important as social distancing to slow the spread of the virus. While sheltering in place we discovered new interests, and rediscovered old ones with the weather changing. Keep challenging yourself, try new things and most importantly, practice self care. We are in this together, stay strong! What have you been up to while sheltering in place? #youthinaction #makeadifference #covid19 #togetherathome #MN

It's amazing what a few nice days in a row can do to your mental wellbeing. Take a work call outside on the deck, take a lunch break hike, or any other way you can get outside! Get creative, continue to social distance and explore this beautiful area we call home! #youthinaction #makeadifference #duluthmn #covid19 #hiking #greatoutdoors #inthistogether

YIA is a proud member of the Duluth Youth Agency Coalition (DYAC). We encourage all our YIA youth to join in the fun to brighten our neighborhoods! #youthinactionmn #chalktwinports

Happy Mother’s Day! Anyone buy treats locally? One of our coordinators had this delicious ice cream cake from @lovecreamery! This time last year @lovecreamery graciously donated their time and ice cream for our end-of-year recognition ceremony. We’re so thankful for our supportive community. #supportlocal #mothersday2020 #lovecreameryduluth #youthinactionmn

Congrats to the 5 senior recipients of our scholarship night! It might not have been the recognition night we pictured at the beginning of the year, but when life hands you lemons... you stay home and safely distance yourself from others! Well deserved to you all! Good luck in your future endeavors! #youthinaction #makeadifference #covid19 #togetherathome #congrats #seniors2020 #thankyou

“Through YIA I have become closer with many of my classmates, I have become better at trying new things, and I’ve realized how important it is to give back to my community through volunteering…” – Trevor Koski, 2020 YIA Scholarship Recipient graduating from Proctor. 💫 This year Trevor and another YIA Member, Mia, were the MCs for the YIA MAD Conference. Trevor’s best & most impactful experience with YIA was Santa’s Helpers at the Salvation Army. Six of the Proctor YIA Team were carriers for this event. They’re given a dolly to load up each family’s gifts and then wheel them out to their vehicles. Trevor said this event challenged him to get out of his comfort zone and it was very rewarding to know how much everyone appreciated his help. Trevor’s other activities include: NHS, Student Council, Nordic Skiing, Knowledge Bowl, Animal Allies Dog Walker, Kid Ski Instructor, Food Bank Volunteer, Volleyball, Junior Rotarian, Blood Drive Coordinator, Debate Club, Student Tutoring & Math Team. Congratulations Trevor! #youthinactionmn #railstrong #stlouiscountymn #seniorspotlight

Congrats to the 5 senior recipients of our scholarship night! Well deserved to you all! Good luck in your future endeavors! #youthinaction #makeadifference #covid19 #togetherathome #congrats #seniors2020 #thankyou
